The Low-Down on Food Labels and Health Claims

Know what you’re putting into the food you serve your patrons—use this quick guide as a reference for ambiguous health claims, labels and more.

  • Calories: “Low in calories” means the product contains fewer than 40 calories per recommended serving. “Reduced calories” means the product contains 25% fewer calories than the original version of the product.
  • Sugar: A “sugar free” product can still contain sugar—less than 0.5g of sugar per serving, that is.
  • Sodium: A product is “low in sodium” if it has 140mg of sodium or less per serving. It’s “very low sodium” if it has 35mg of sodium or less per serving. Finally, it’s “sodium free” if it has less than 5mg of sodium per serving.
